NZ Machine Hire dig in for the long haul

For most of us, shifting eight cubic metres of mulch or levelling ground for a community shed is a serious logistical challenge. But for NZ Machine Hire, it’s all in a day’s work — and part of their ongoing support for Te Hōnonga a Iwi Restoring Rosedale Park.

A foundation SME partner in the restoration project, NZ Machine Hire has been with us from the beginning. Directors Josiah Steiner and Chris Watt have consistently stepped up with their machinery, expertise and generosity — enabling us to get key infrastructure in place across both the restoration site and the growing community food garden.

Based just 200 metres from the park, NZ Machine Hire provides excavator and machinery rentals for residential, commercial, and civil construction projects across Auckland. Their modern, well-maintained fleet, flexible hire options, and easy online booking system support both contractors and DIY clients alike.

“We like to support local initiatives that are focused on a better future,” says Josiah.

Their contributions to our Rosedale Park project span multiple years and milestones, including:

  • 2022 – Loaned equipment to reinstate Hilton Brown’s lower carpark after initial site clearance

  • 2023 – Supplied machinery and labour to restore the bioreactor site for native planting

  • 2024 – Provided a compactor to prepare the wheelchair-accessible pad for vertical garden beds

  • 2025 – Loaned truck and digger to move 8m³ of mulch and prepare the garden shed and water tank site

  • 2025 – Offered discounted hire on equipment to lay the foundations for the working station, glasshouse and shade house pads in Phase 2 of the community garden build

“Their investment has been generous, ongoing and extensive,” says project co-ordinator Nicky Shave. “They respond to our requests with kindness and patience. We simply couldn’t have achieved what we have without them.”

Environmental care is central to NZ Machine Hire’s way of working. The team has implemented systems that meet — and often exceed — recommended standards for sustainability and pollution prevention.

“We all have a part to play in the betterment of New Zealand’s future environment,” Josiah says.

Their commitment extends beyond Restoring Rosedale Park. NZ Machine Hire also partners with the Kindness Collective Foundation, supplying equipment and labour for school gardens that grow fresh produce for tamariki across Auckland.
